Protection of Margaritifera margaritifera

About the project

The project is under the action plan for Margaritifera margaritifera, specifically protection of this species below the village Arnoštov (part of Křišťanov), in the upper part of the Blanice river basin in the Prachatice region. This section of the river Blanice (several kilometres) flows out of the Boletice military area and is the most important site for this species in the Czech Republic - its biggest population is situated here, The project is part of the implementation of the action plan for Margaritifera margaritifera in the Czech Republic, approved by the Ministry of Environment on December 18, 2013.

Protection of Margaritifera margaritifera

Margaritifera margaritifera is protected in the Blanice river basin according to both the EU and national legislation - there are SCI Šumava, SCI Boletice and SCI Blanice. It is also a target species of the national natural monuments Prameniště Blanice, Blanice, natural monument Blanice and landscape protected area Šumava. For its quality it has been included in the system of biogenetic reserves established by the Council of Europe.

Under the species protection Margaritifera margaritifera is protected by the Czech legislation, the Nature Conservation Act (no. 114/1992 Coll., on nature conservation and landscape protection, as amended) and its implementing decree no. 395/1992 Coll., in the category critically endangered. It is listed as critically endangered (CR) also in the Red List of the Czech Republic. As to the international protection it is listed in the annexes II and IV of the Habitats Directive (the Council Directive 92/43/EEC on the Conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora), the Bern Convention (The Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats) (annex III) and the Bonn Convention. There is a European action plan prepared for this species (Araujo & Ramos 2001) and it is listed in the Red List of IUCN in the category endangered (EN).

In the Czech Republic the species survives only in residual population on the edger of its original areal, outside its ecological optimum. Even app. 60 years ago the quality of its water environment, as well as its relative stability, was suitable for this species, there was sufficient food for it, suitable temperature regime and appropriate fish stock, and thus the species prospered. Nowadays it is estimated that the species abundance decreased to less than 1% of the original abundance (Simon et al. 2015). It did not became extinct primarily thanks to its longevity (100 - 140 years) and activities protecting its biotope and populations since 1980s. The Blanice river basin hosts one of the most abundant Central European populations of this species, there is more than half of the total number of individuals.

Chemical pollution is identified by the action plan as one of the causes of endangerment of this species. The main groups of pollutants are industrial wastewaters (with direct toxic impact), toxic metals and specifically xenobiotically active substances such as pesticides or pharmaceuticals (chapter 1.4.3. of the action plan).

According to the action plan, „currently the biotope of Margaritifera margaritifera in the Blanice and Zlatý potok river basins is relatively little disrupted and substantially corresponds to the requirements of the species. To improve the water quality, there are both technical measures (especially the construction of the sewage treatment plant in Arnoštov, modernization of the sewage treatment plant in Křišťanov) and biological measures that should be taken (chapter 3.2.1. of the action plan).

Project activities

Within the project the construction of the sewage treatment plant and sewerage system will be realized. These measures will ensure protection of the target species from municipal pollution at its biotope at the Blanice river basin due to municipal pollution and infiltration of wastewater to the river flow. At the same time with the construction of the sewage treatment plant the project will include chemistry evaluation and bioindicative assessment of the construction to assess the impact of the project on the target species. There will also be a biological supervision of the construction.

Project objective

  • Protection of the population of Margaritifera margaritifera against threat of pollution of its biotope in the Blanice river due to sewage leak.

Outcomes of the project

  • Within the project, construction of the sewage treatment plant and sewerage system will be realized; these will provide for protection of Margaritifera margaritifera against threat of sewage pollution of its biotope in the Blanice river basin
  • Within the project, chemistry evaluation and bioindicative assessment of the construction to assess the impact of the project on the target species will be also realized. There will also be a  biological supervision of the construction.
